Ysearcher.com Fake Search Engine

browser hijacker redirect website

Ysearcher.com represents a fraudulent search engine, often incapable of providing genuine search results and instead redirecting users to legitimate search websites.

These deceptive search engines are commonly promoted through redirects initiated by browser hijackers, which typically alter browser settings. However, the extensions associated with ysearcher.com, namely Adblock for Youtube™ and Music downloader for SoundCloud™ (with the possibility of others), did not make such modifications. Typically, browser-hijacking software designates promoted sites as default search engines, homepages, and new tab/window URLs.

In our investigation, we identified two extensions, Adblock for Youtube™ and Music downloader for SoundCloud™, endorsing ysearcher.com. Although these extensions did not alter browsers, their installation led to users being redirected to the ysearcher.com site when entering search queries in the URL bar.

As mentioned earlier, fake search engines seldom produce actual search results, instead directing users to legitimate search websites. During our research, ysearcher.com redirected to the Google search engine (google.com). It's important to note that the landing page may vary due to factors like user geolocation influencing redirects.

Moreover, browser hijackers commonly incorporate data-tracking functionalities, and both Adblock for Youtube™ and Music downloader for SoundCloud™ are no exceptions. The tracked information may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, browser cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, financial data, and more.

What Are Fake Search Engines and Why Should You Avoid Them?

Fake search engines are deceptive websites designed to mimic legitimate search engines but lack the ability to provide genuine search results. These fraudulent platforms often redirect users to legitimate search engines or other websites while posing as functional search tools. There are several reasons why you should avoid fake search engines:

Misleading Search Results:
Fake search engines often fail to generate accurate or relevant search results. Users may be misled into thinking they are using a reliable search tool when, in fact, the results are manipulated or non-functional.

Privacy and Security Risks:
Fake search engines can pose significant privacy and security risks. They may employ data-tracking mechanisms, capturing users' browsing activities, search queries, and personal information. This data can be exploited for malicious purposes, leading to privacy breaches or identity theft.

Malware Distribution:
Some fake search engines are associated with malware distribution. Users may unknowingly download malicious software or become victims of drive-by downloads, exposing their devices to various forms of malware.

Browser Hijacking:
Fake search engines are often promoted through browser hijackers. These malicious software alters browser settings, making the deceptive search engine the default homepage, search engine, or new tab. This can be challenging for users to revert without proper intervention.

Phishing Attempts:
Fake search engines may serve as a front for phishing attempts. Users could be directed to fraudulent websites designed to steal login credentials, personal information, or financial details.

Unwanted Advertisements:
Many fake search engines are created to generate revenue through advertising. Users may be bombarded with unwanted advertisements, pop-ups, and sponsored links, leading to a disruptive and unpleasant browsing experience.
