'YouPorn' Email Scam Attempts to Scare Victims

computer scam

Upon inspecting the email claiming to be from "YouPorn," it has been determined that it is fraudulent. Multiple variations of this spam email exist, all of which are a variation of sextortion scams.

The common theme in these emails is a false assertion that the recipient has been identified in sexually explicit content recently uploaded to the YouPorn website. The emails present various payment options for the removal of this content and prevention of future uploads.

It is essential to emphasize that all the assertions made in these emails are baseless, and this correspondence has no affiliation with the legitimate YouPorn website.

One variant of the "YouPorn" spam email, with the subject "Urgent: Uploaded content notification," claims that YouPorn's AI-powered tools have detected the recipient in sexually explicit content. This is presented as a security measure, as the dissemination of non-consensual images or videos is against YouPorn's policies.

If the content was indeed uploaded with the recipient's consent, there is no action required on their part. After a seven-day period, the content will be accessible for the recipient's review and that of other users of the website.

However, if this is not the case, the email provides options for content removal. Some versions of the "YouPorn" scam emails offer a supposed free removal option, but when recipients attempt to select it, they are redirected to their browser's homepage since the link is void. Consequently, victims are compelled to explore the payment-based options, which differ among email versions.

The variant we investigated presented a $199 option that includes "basic express removal, blocking, and protection against re-uploading" for twenty websites within YouPorn's partner network. The $699 choice, labeled as "Plan A," extends the previous features to three hundred sites and offers protection for one year. "Plan B," priced at $1399, covers a three-year duration, encompassing "Plan A" and introducing facial recognition tools for content blocking.

Payments are exclusively accepted in Bitcoin cryptocurrency, and the process is automated, necessitating no interaction from the recipient's end.

As mentioned earlier, all the claims made in these spam emails are fraudulent. Furthermore, it is vital to reiterate that this scam correspondence has no association with YouPorn or any other legitimate services or entities. Consequently, these emails do not pose any genuine threat to their recipients.

What Are Sextortion Scams?

Sextortion scams are a type of online scam where cybercriminals use personal information, often of a sexual or intimate nature, to extort money or other forms of value from their victims. These scams typically involve the following elements:

  • Initial Contact: The scam often begins with an unsolicited email or message to the victim. The message may claim that the sender has compromising or explicit photos, videos, or other personal information about the victim.
  • Threats: The scammer threatens to release or share this sensitive information publicly, often on the internet or social media, unless the victim complies with their demands. The threats can be explicit and frightening, creating a sense of urgency and fear in the victim.
  • Demands for Payment: To prevent the release of the supposed compromising material, the scammer usually demands a ransom payment. This payment is typically requested in cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, to make it more challenging to trace.
  • Social Engineering: Scammers may employ social engineering techniques to make their threats seem more credible. This can include using personal details about the victim or employing persuasive language to manipulate their emotions.
  • Fake Evidence: Scammers often claim to have evidence of the compromising material, even if they don't actually possess it. They may use generic or fabricated information to create the illusion of authenticity.
  • Fear and Shame: Sextortion scams exploit the victim's fear, embarrassment, or shame, making it more likely that they will comply with the demands to prevent the alleged exposure.
