Upon closer inspection, we confirmed that The Yellow Tab functions as a browser hijacker. It alters browser settings to endorse the fake search engine theyellownewtab.com through redirects.
Browser hijackers commonly manipulate default search engines, homepages, and new tab/window settings, compelling users to visit the promoted website when opening new tabs/windows or entering search queries into the URL bar.
In the case of The Yellow Tab, these redirects direct users to theyellownewtab.com. Typically, illegitimate search engines fail to provide search results and redirect users to legitimate search engines. During our investigation, theyellownewtab.com redirected to the Yahoo search engine (search.yahoo.com). However, redirection destinations may vary based on factors like user location.
