Snow New Tab Browser Extension

While investigating suspicious websites, we came across Snow New Tab, a browser extension that was identified as a browser hijacker. Snow New Tab modifies browser settings to promote the snow-newtab.com fake search engine through redirects, and it also gathers sensitive user information.

Browser hijackers typically alter settings such as homepages, default search engines, and new browser tabs/windows. Consequently, with the installation of such software, opening new browser tabs/windows or entering search queries into the URL bar results in redirects to the endorsed website, often a fraudulent search engine – in this case, snow-newtab.com. These illegitimate search engines usually lack the ability to generate search results and direct users to normal Internet search websites. Snow-newtab.com directed users to the Bing search engine, although this destination may vary based on factors such as user geolocation.

To complicate removal and prevent users from restoring their browsers, browser-hijacking software often employs persistence-ensuring mechanisms.

In addition to its browser-altering activities, Snow New Tab also engages in spying on users' browsing activity, a standard feature for browser hijackers. The collected information may encompass URLs visited, viewed webpages, entered search queries, Internet cookies, account log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, financial data, and more.
