RankingNetwork Adware

popup ads adware

Our researchers identified the rogue application RankingNetworks while going over new file submissions. Upon analyzing this application, we discovered that it belongs to the AdLoad malware family and operates as adware, generating revenue for its developers through advertising.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, functions by delivering unwanted and potentially harmful advertisements to users. This external graphical content, including banners, coupons, pop-ups, overlays, and more, can be inserted into visited websites or other interfaces.

It is essential to note that specific conditions may be necessary for adware to function properly, such as having a compatible browser/system or specific user geolocation, or visiting particular sites. Even if RankingNetworks does not display ads, it still poses a threat to device integrity and user safety.

Ads presented by adware often promote online scams, unreliable or hazardous software, and even malware. Some of these ads may initiate stealthy downloads or installations when clicked. Importantly, any genuine content encountered through these advertisements is likely endorsed by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

Additionally, AdLoad applications commonly feature browser-hijacking functionalities; however, our analysis found that the RankingNetworks adware did not exhibit these characteristics.

Moreover, software in this category typically possesses data-tracking capabilities, and this may apply to RankingNetworks. Adware has the potential to collect various information, including visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, internet cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable details, and credit card numbers.

How Can You Best Keep Your System Clear of Adware?

Keeping your system clear of adware involves adopting a combination of proactive measures and good cybersecurity practices. Here are some effective strategies to help you maintain a clean and adware-free system:

Use Reliable Security Software:
Install reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on your system. Keep the software updated to ensure it can identify and remove the latest adware threats.

Regularly Update Operating System and Software:
Keep your operating system, browsers, and other software up to date with the latest security patches and updates. Adware often exploits vulnerabilities in outdated software.

Exercise Caution with Downloads:
Only download software, applications, and files from official and trusted sources. Be wary of downloading content from unfamiliar or suspicious websites.

Customize Installation Settings:
When installing new software, choose custom installation options rather than the default settings. This allows you to review and deselect any additional software or adware bundled with the intended program.

Be Cautious with Email Attachments and Links:
Avoid opening email attachments or clicking on links from unknown or untrusted sources. Phishing emails are a common method for distributing adware.

Use Ad-blockers:
Consider using browser extensions or add-ons that block intrusive advertisements. These tools can help prevent the display of unwanted ads and reduce the risk of adware infections.

Configure Browser Settings:
Adjust your browser settings to enhance security. Disable unnecessary browser extensions, plugins, or add-ons. Regularly review and manage permissions granted to websites.
