Local Weather Tab Browser Extension

Our researchers discovered the Local Weather Tab, a questionable browser extension. Upon examination, we identified it as a browser hijacker. Local Weather Tab alters browser settings to promote the fake search engine localweathertab.com through redirection.

Browser hijackers typically designate endorsed websites as the default search engines, homepages, and URLs for new tabs/windows. In this case, Local Weather Tab modifies these settings to localweathertab.com. Consequently, opening a new browser tab/window or entering a search string in the address bar leads to redirections to the localweathertab.com page.

It's worth noting that browser-hijacking software often employs mechanisms to ensure persistence, such as restricting access to removal-related settings or undoing changes made by the user, thereby hindering browser recovery.

Fake search engines typically lack the capability to deliver search results, redirecting users to legitimate internet search sites. In the instance of localweathertab.com, the redirection is to the Yahoo search engine (search.yahoo.com). Importantly, the destination of this webpage may vary, influenced by factors like user geolocation.

Additionally, Local Weather Tab may possess data-tracking capabilities. Browser hijackers commonly target various information, including visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, and financial data.

What Are Fake Search Engines?

Fake search engines are deceptive websites or tools that imitate the appearance and functionality of legitimate search engines but operate with malicious or misleading intentions. Unlike genuine search engines that provide accurate and unbiased search results, fake search engines are designed to deceive users and often lead to undesirable consequences. Here are key characteristics and risks associated with fake search engines:

Deceptive Appearance:
Fake search engines often mimic the visual design of popular and trusted search engines to appear legitimate. This can mislead users into thinking they are using a reliable search tool.

Manipulative Redirects:
Instead of generating authentic search results, fake search engines may redirect users to other websites, often those controlled by malicious actors. These redirects can expose users to scams, phishing sites, or potentially harmful content.

Browser Hijacking:
Some fake search engines engage in browser hijacking, altering browser settings such as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URLs without the user's consent. This can be disruptive and challenging to reverse.

Unwanted Advertisements:
Fake search engines often display intrusive and unwanted advertisements, pop-ups, or banners. Clicking on these ads may lead to further redirects, additional malware installations, or other malicious activities.

Data Collection:
Many fake search engines are designed to collect users' search queries, browsing habits, and personal information. This data can be misused for targeted advertising, identity theft, or other malicious purposes.

Phishing Attempts:
Some fake search engines may be used as part of phishing campaigns, attempting to trick users into providing sensitive information such as login credentials, financial details, or personal data.

Poor Search Results:
Even if fake search engines display search results, these are often of low quality and may include irrelevant or misleading links. Users searching for information may not find accurate or trustworthy results.
