ControlMethod Adware
During our evaluation of new file samples, our research team came across the ControlMethod application. Our investigation revealed that ControlMethod is a form of adware belonging to the AdLoad malware family, operating by conducting intrusive advertising campaigns.
Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is designed to generate revenue for developers through advertising. Typically, this type of software displays various ads, such as pop-ups, coupons, overlays, surveys, banners, on visited websites and other interfaces.
These advertisements often promote online scams, untrustworthy or hazardous software, and even malware. Some ads can be triggered, for example, by clicking, leading to the execution of scripts that initiate stealthy downloads or installations.
It is important to note that while genuine products or services might be advertised through these displays, they are unlikely to be officially endorsed. The motivation behind such endorsements is likely rooted in the illegitimate acquisition of commissions through the abuse of affiliate programs associated with the promoted content.
Advertising-supported software may refrain from delivering intrusive ad campaigns under certain unfavorable conditions, such as an incompatible browser/system, user geolocation, or specific websites not being visited. However, regardless of whether ControlMethod displays ads, the presence of this app on a device poses risks to system and user safety.
While we have previously encountered AdLoad applications with browser-hijacking capabilities, ControlMethod did not exhibit such traits during our analysis.
Additionally, it is probable that this adware-type app incorporates data-tracking functionalities, as is customary for software within this category. The targeted information may encompass browsing and search engine histories, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and more.
