Captchawave.top Uses Fake Bot Check

During our investigation of suspicious websites, our researchers came across the deceptive webpage called captchawave.top. This website aims to trick its visitors into granting permission for browser notification spam. Additionally, it has the capability to redirect users to other websites that are likely untrustworthy or potentially dangerous.

Visitors usually land on captchawave.top and similar webpages through redirects caused by websites utilizing malicious advertising networks.

The content displayed on these rogue websites can vary depending on the visitor's geolocation, determined by their IP address. When we accessed captchawave.top, it presented us with a fraudulent CAPTCHA test.

The webpage featured an image of a robot accompanied by the statement, "CLICK ALLOW TO CONFIRM THAT YOU ARE NOT A ROBOT!" If a user falls for this deceptive test and grants permission, captchawave.top will bombard them with notifications promoting various scams, unreliable or harmful software, and potentially even malware.

In summary, websites like captchawave.top can lead to system infections, severe privacy breaches, financial losses, and even identity theft for unsuspecting users.

How Can You Tell a Captcha is Fake?

Detecting a fake CAPTCHA can be challenging since attackers continually refine their techniques. However, there are some signs that can help you identify a potentially fake CAPTCHA:

  • Content Discrepancies: Pay attention to the wording, grammar, and overall presentation of the CAPTCHA. Legitimate CAPTCHAs typically adhere to a consistent style and language. If you notice spelling errors, poor grammar, or unusual phrases, it could be a red flag.
  • Unusual or Illogical Requests: Fake CAPTCHAs may include strange or unnecessary requests that seem unrelated to the purpose of a CAPTCHA. For example, asking you to provide personal information, install software, make a payment, or click on suspicious links.
  • Visual Anomalies: Legitimate CAPTCHAs often feature clear and easily distinguishable characters or objects. If the CAPTCHA appears distorted, blurry, or the characters are difficult to recognize, it might indicate a fake.
  • Unexpected Placement: Legitimate CAPTCHAs are commonly found on websites to protect against automated bots. If you encounter a CAPTCHA on a webpage where it seems unnecessary or unrelated to the site's functionality, it could be a sign of a fake CAPTCHA.
